I am not so familiar with debian (are you talking about apt-get ?) but the update management software under mandriva is called urpmi, under the command line, as root, type : "urpmi --auto-update"

the GUI tool is available under menu Configure->System->"Update your system".

that could be a couple of issues, either the battery has a problem or -more likely- the charge circuit is affected by a defect that prevents it from charging the battery (especially if the battery has been left to discharge below the security threshold). In that case you can apply through the gdium.com web site and we can replace the machine.
